Smith-Marsette joined the University of Iowa and played football as a wide receiver. He played for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2017-2020.

In his freshman year, Smith-Marsette received 18 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Gradually, he became a more regular player.

He caught 44 passes for 722 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 108 yards and three touchdowns in his junior year. He became the 2019 Holiday Bowl offensive MVP, as the Hawkeyes beat the USC Trojans by 49-24.

Ihmir Smith-Marsette became a professional footballer in 2021. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the 5th round, overall 157th, in the 2021 NFL Draft.

In May 2021, Smith-Marsette signed a four-year rookie contract with the Vikings. However, the wide receiver was waived in August 2022. Again, he was signed and waived by the Chicago Bears.
