Steve Wilks is an American football coach and former player. He is the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL. Wilks was hired by the Chicago Bears as defensive backs coach in 2006.

Steven Bernard Wilks was born on August 8, 1969, in Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S. He attended West Charlotte High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S., and played high school football as a wide receiver, defensive back, and kick returner.
Playing Career
Wilks joined Appalachian State University in 1987 and played college football for the Mountaineers from 1987-1991.
He helped the Mountaineers capture the Southern Conference Championship in 1987 and 1991. He finished his collegiate career with 103 tackles, four interceptions, and four blocked kicks.
Coaching Career
Steve Wilks was hired by the Chicago Bears as defensive backs coach in 2006. The Bears fired Wilks on December 30, 2008.
Wilks was hired as defensive backs coach of the San Diego Chargers in 2009. When Ron Rivera became head coach of the Panthers, he hired Wilks as a secondary coach on January 15, 2012.
On January 22, 2018, Wilks joined the Arizona Cardinals as their head coach. In the 2018 season, Wilks made his head coaching debut against the Washington Redskins. On December 31, 2018, the Cardinals fired Wilks. On January 14, 2019, Wilks was hired by the Cleveland Browns to be their defensive coordinator.
In 2021, Wilks went to the University of Missouri as their defensive coordinator. On February 9, 2022, the Panthers announced the hiring of Wilks as Matt Rhule’s new defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach.
On February 9, 2023, it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers hired Wilks as their defensive coordinator.
