In the National Football League (NFL), the Super Bowl championship game is played annually to determine the league champion. The victorious club is awarded a ring to commemorate its victory. Since only one Vince Lombardi Trophy is given to the winning team, the Super Bowl rings are a way for the players and team members to remember their victory. The Super Bowl runners-up also receive rings for making the finals.

In addition, players from the winning AFC or NFC teams receive rings. Players who have spent at least three games on their team’s active or inactive list are eligible to receive postseason pay from the NFL. Everyone gets paid the same amount for playing in the playoffs, whether a starter, a backup, or injured.

Design of the Super Bowl Ring

These rings frequently feature yellow or rose gold and diamonds. The name and logo of the team, the words “World Champions,” and the number of the Super Bowl are all typical, usually written in Roman numerals.

Every player’s name and team number are engraved on their ring. The NFL spends up to 150 rings, and the champion team shoulders any further expenditures. Jostens, a business that specializes in such collectibles, produces most rings. The rings are typically presented in a beautiful box or showcase.

The size of today’s championship rings is so obnoxious that even the largest linemen have trouble getting used to them. A three-time Super Bowl champion lineman once told me he didn’t get to wear his Super Bowl XXXIX ring because his massive hand couldn’t fit it. The ring’s 110-gram weight is equivalent to about 20 nickels or 40 cents. The smaller Super Bowl XXXVIII ring was the one this lineman favored.

Difference in Designs

The Green Bay Packers Super Bowl XLV ring

More than a hundred diamonds adorned the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl XLV ring. Since 1929, the Packer logo has had 13 diamonds, one for each championship the team has won.

The New England Patriots Super Bowl XLIX ring

At an estimated $36,500 per ring, the Super Bowl XLIX rings awarded to the New England Patriots were the most costly jewelry Jostens had ever made until the rings were awarded for Super Bowls 50 and LI.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ ring

The Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl LII ring has 127 diamonds on the bezel, which is the sum of the jersey numbers of the three players (Corey Clement, Trey Burton, and Nick Foles) who touched the ball after the snap during the Philly Special trick play.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ring

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, they were given rings with 319 diamonds on the face to remember it. In addition to being the first of its kind, the ring’s top is removable, revealing a hand-carved rendition of Raymond James Stadium, where the club made history by winning a Super Bowl in front of its home fans.

Highest Super Bowl Ring Winners

Bill Belichick’s teams have won a record number of championships. He now owns eight rings. He won six Super Bowls as the head coach of the New England Patriots and two more as the NFL’s defensive coordinator.

Tom Brady and Neal Dahlen have the second-most Super Bowl rings. Seven vehicles were gathered. As a quarterback, Tom Barret won seven games. A former NFL head coach and general manager, Neal Dahlen won five championships while working for the San Francisco 49ers and two championships for the Denver Broncos.

Super Bowl Rings sold by the owners

Not only are real rings popular as souvenirs, but so are copies of rings from different eras. Dave Meggett sold his ring on eBay. In the middle of 2008, two Super Bowl rings from the 1970 Steelers sold for more than $69,000 each on eBay. In November 2008, Patriots safety Je’Rod Cherry raffled off his Super Bowl XXXVI ring to raise money for organizations that support kids in Africa and Asia. But tight end Shannon Sharpe gave his Super Bowl ring to his brother Sterling, who was hurt.

  • For a long time, gold and diamonds were the materials of choice for Super Bowl rings. On the other hand, the Green Bay Packers were the first to have a platinum ring custom-made for them in 2010.

  • The NFL on all Super Bowl rings requires the Super Bowl logo. The winning team and its owner make the final decisions about the rest of the design.

  • The ring’s face often features some big diamonds corresponding to the team’s total number of Super Bowl victories.
  • On the secondary market, specific rings can fetch more than $50,000.

Cost of a Super Bowl ring

Even though Balfour and Tiffany & Co. also make Super Bowl rings, Jostens has made almost two-thirds of them. These are not just old pieces of metal; they come with a fancy display case to prove it. For example, the ring given to the Kansas City Chiefs after Super Bowl LIV has 10.85 carats of gems. It has 3.3 carats of diamonds and 5.95 carats of rubies.

The NFL will pay between $5,000 and $7,000 per ring, up to 150 rings per franchise. You should expect to pay anything from $30,000 to $50,000 per ring once all the costs are factored in.

Many famous athletes have given their rings to charities or sold them to raise money for them. To help the hungry, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft donated over a million dollars from selling his Super Bowl LI ring. The original owner’s identity is a significant factor in determining the value. Lawrence Taylor made just over $230,000 from his Super Bowl XXV ring sale.

By winning Super Bowl XLV, the Packers made history by being the first team to get platinum rings. Platinum is even more expensive than gold if you believe gold is pricey. Every one of the enormous rings was studded with about 3.5 carats of diamonds. There were thirteen diamonds set into the letter “G” in the center of the ring, one for each championship the team had won since 1929. The ring features a total of 92 diamonds, one for each season that the Packers have been active. The total mass of the ring is 110 grams or almost a quarter of a pound.

An unusual incident about Super Bowl Ring

In 2005, it was said that Russian President Vladimir Putin stole a Super Bowl ring from Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots. This caused a small diplomatic problem. The ring was given to Putin out of respect for the Russian people and Putin’s leadership. Kraft said it in a statement released immediately after the gift was presented. After the fact, Kraft claimed that the White House had pressured him into issuing a false statement. The Kremlin is home to an exhibition where the ring can be seen, among other artifacts.

Unknown Facts about Super Bowl Ring

Collectors pay a high price for these rings from the Super Bowl. In the 47 years after the first Super Bowl, 47 different championship rings were produced.

The team’s ownership and management vote on the business that will create the championship ring for the Super Bowl champion. They also choose what kinds of commemorative pieces to make for their fan base, including whether to provide the same ring or a cheaper version to front office staff, make jewelry available to friends and relatives, and so on.

No other company than Jostens has produced more Super Bowl rings. The Green Bay Packers’ original ring from Super Bowl I and the Baltimore Ravens’ current ring were both crafted by Jostens. Thirty of the 47 Super Bowl championship rings have been produced by Jostens.

The NFL caps team ring spending at about $7,000 and foots the bill for the first 150 trophies. Teams that give out more than 150 rings are responsible for covering the cost of the extra rings. The winners of numerous Super Bowls deserve to splurge a little more on diamonds. Often, manufacturers lose money on the rings they produce. Manufacturers are willing to make rings at or near cost because they get a lot of attention and can make more money by selling other products to family, friends, and team fans.

Even the team that doesn’t win the Super Bowl still gets a ring. The AFC or NFC Championship ring is typically smaller and has less sparkle than the winning ring, yet both of these rings seem to grow larger over time. The NFL strongly recommends (and some even argue requires) that both the winning and losing teams have their Super Bowl emblem engraved on their respective rings.

As a result of their Super Bowl XLV defeat by the Packers, the Pittsburgh Steelers broke with tradition and did not give out AFC Championship rings. A Steelers executive confirmed the decision but declined to provide further explanation. Instead of trophies, the team presented watches to the players, coaches, and front-office staff. Speculatively, the club may have felt that an AFC championship ring, while its significance, would be overshadowed by their massive Super Bowl XLIII championship ring from two years earlier. The events down here may have influenced their choice.

The Steelers’ players were dissatisfied with the size of their Super Bowl XL rings. A winning Super Bowl ring weighed between 60 and 70 grams by 2002. Upon winning their second Super Bowl, the Patriots created the largest Super Bowl ring in history. The Super Bowl XXXVIII ring they received was about 100 grams in weight. When the Patriots won the following year again, their rings weighed 110 grams each.

The following year, the Steelers unveiled a truly spectacular Super Bowl XL ring, adorned with five huge princess-cut diamonds, one for each of the franchise’s Super Bowl victories. In comparison to other rings of the day, however, its 53-gram weight was notably light. When the players found out their rings were laughably little compared to those of their NFL opponents, they were understandably furious. After winning Super Bowl XLIII three years later, the Steelers fixed the problem by getting heavier rings.

The NFL’s New York City headquarters features a stunning collection of championship rings from previous Super Bowl victories. You can’t just stroll off the street and see the great exhibit. The NFL relocated to a new building on Park Avenue a few years ago, and as part of the renovations, a magnifying glass was added to the display so that guests could see the rings up close.

Over the past fifty years, Super Bowl rings have expanded, and so have the presentation cases in which they are kept. Rings used to be presented in tiny velvet boxes, no more than 2 inches long. Modern presentation showcases for engagement rings can weigh as much as four or five pounds, feature full-color graphics, and a glass pane through which the ring can be admired.

Final Thoughts

Every year, the Super Bowl ring has a design that is more daring and flashy than the year before. It’s more than just a bunch of blinged-out metals and stones. The unique ring represents the season’s worth of dedication, sacrifice, and teamwork.

Many athletes see winning the championship as the peak of a long journey with many ups and downs. After weeks of suffering knocks, sprains, and broken bones, the champion is rewarded with confetti raining down on them while they hoist the championship trophy.
