While Brock Purdy never left Sunday’s loss against the Minnesota Vikings, the second-year quarterback is now dealing with a concussion, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Wednesday. Will Purdy get cleared in time for the club’s Week 8 game against the Cincinnati Bengals?
Brock Purdy Injury Update
Purdy began experiencing symptoms on the 49ers’ plane ride back from Minnesota. It remains unclear when he suffered the concussion, but it may have been on this QB sneak attempt.

Purdy will not practice on Wednesday. While he still has time to pass the NFL’s concussion protocol, players have had difficulty getting cleared one week after suffering a brain injury.
San Francisco will hold walkthrough sessions during today’s practice, and Purdy will be allowed to participate during those portions, per Shanahan.
If Purdy can’t suit up against the Bengals, Sam Darnold will take over as the 49ers’ starter. Darnold, who spent last season with the Carolina Panthers, joined San Francisco on a one-year, $4.5 million deal and thrived during the preseason, beating out Trey Lance for the backup QB gig.
Purdy has continued his trajectory from last season and has been one of the league’s most efficient quarterbacks through seven weeks. He’s completed 67.9% of his passes for 1,668 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions and trails only Josh Allen in total EPA generated under center.
Purdy isn’t the only 49er dealing with an injury this week. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to miss at least one more game with a hairline fracture in his shoulder, while left tackle Trent Williams also failed to practice on Wednesday after sitting out of Week 7’s loss.
